Home of the Forest Lake Lakers

A Letter from Coach Dennis Canfield

As many of you Laker fans, families, and players know, the team has moved to a new home in Forest Lake, MN. The Lakers also have a new Head Coach, Dennis Canfield, who is very excited about the opportunity to coach the team, and he has very high goals in sight, as he wants to bring the team back to the National Championship stage. To GM Ralph Hayne this is great news, as he would love for the team to have that opportunity in front of them once again. But talking with both men, the ultimate goal remains to have a solid group of young men who play the game with the heart and willpower of a champion regardless of the scoreboard or how the season goes. The Lakers are excited about the offseason, and hope some key cogs return, while they will also be recruiting many new players as Coach Canfield looks to develop a system for success. Attached is a message from Coach Canfield on what the community can expect from him and the team on the ice.

Lakers add Minnesota Native to Coaching Staff

Forest Lake, MN - Dennis Canfield, Head Coach of the Forest Lake Lakers, announced today they have hired Matt McAlpin as an assistant coach for 2014-15 season.  McAlpin, a Minnesota native from Annandale, MN, comes to the Lakers with a wealth of hockey coaching experience that ranges from Bantams to High School where he was a coach for the Annandale Maple Lake H.S team.  McAlpin also has coached at various levels in Ohio, including being the head coach for the Wooster Oilers Juniors, currently a member team of the MnJHL.  In addition to coaching, McAlpin is also a skills and development trainer and has worked in professional hockey in the ECHL as a scout for the Toledo Walleye, formerly the Storm.
“Matt was the first phone call I made once I took the job in Forest Lake.  I’ve had the privilege of knowing Matt for 15 years. We have worked together on many different occasions.  I have the upmost respect for him and what he brings to this hockey club.  He is extremely knowledgeable and versed on systems and understands the game and style of play we will be bringing to Forest Lake.  Not only will he be an asset to the coaching staff but a valuable resource for our players to learn from” said Coach Canfield.

When asked about joining the Lakers, McAlpin mentioned the long history of the program and what a great opportunity this is to be joining the Lakers and united with a longtime friend and colleague.  “Coach Canfield and I go way back. He’s a passionate hockey mind who understands the game and his player6,s with enthusiasm for the game that is unmatched.  When he asked me to join the staff and assist in development of the players and returning the program to its past success, I was very excited.  Everyone knows of the Lakers throughout Minnesota and with the move into a new arena and a state of the art locker room and great training facility, it was something I could not pass up.” Said McAlpin.
McAlpin went on to say that he knows Coach Canfield’s style well and that players can expect a no nonsense, up tempo practice with a great deal of emphasis put on not only skill development but also knowledge of systems which will translate over to the games.  “We will be big on understanding the game and how to play not only with, but without the puck.”
